Polysomnography

What is Polysomnography?

Polysomnography is the diagnostic test used in sleep studies. The result of the test is called a polysomnogram. This will be your first serious step in diagnosing your particular sleep disorder. Basically, once you visit your doctor with sleep concerns, he will probably direct you to a sleep specialist, generally a pulmonologist.  The first order of business once you see him will probably be to discuss your symptoms in detail and then set up a sleep study to in order to further diagnose your problems.  The test will monitor many of your biophysiological signals, such as heart rhythm, brain function, and eye movement throughout an entire night of sleep. The results from this test will allow your sleep specialist to accurately diagnose your specific disorder.  Your sleep center will generally be at a different location than your specialist’s office, and you can schedule the appointment on a night that’s convenient for you. For those with circadian rhythm sleep disorders and those that work the late shift, special appointments can be made during the day. It’s a painless procedure, however you will be hooked up to a few wires with sticky electrodes, which some may find slightly uncomfortable.
